A speaker is a device that helps convert an electronic signal into an audible electrical sound through a transducer. It is also called a speaker system. A system may consist of several speakers of different configurations, a crossover frequency filter, and wires connecting to an electronic signal. A speaker is sometimes called a speaker driver system as it has several components. A typical speaker system has three speaker drivers that have different audio outputs according to the speaker design. Speakers are usually enclosed in a rectangular wooden box. This wooden box directs the speaker driver sound to an intended area with no distortion at maximum efficiency. A speaker system should be a complete system consisting of a sound source (usually microphones), mixers, preamplifiers, power amplifiers, wiring and connectors, and a speaker system. An audio amplifier may supply an electronic signal. Audio amplifiers are electronic devices that increase and decrease audio sound output fed to a speaker system. The amplifier may also have features that can enhance the output of audio sound. 

Increasing Sound volume

Although increasing sound volume is not a good indicator for qualities of a good speaker and audio system, it may also help one choose and decide preferred qualities. A speaker system and audio system should give quality sounds when used at maximum sound volume for a sustained amount of time. A good speaker and audio system can operate at its near maximum volume setting without any problem. If one encounters a one-time occasion that needs a more powerful speaker and audio system, the current system can cater to this need. When the speaker and audio system is operated at near maximum setting at a sustained amount of time, overheating and distortion can result in the system. You can check the capability of your system by running it at near maximum volume setting for overheating. Usually, audio equipment has powerful air cooling fans that you can check for overheating. Maybe you can check how far your speaker and audio system are by going to the farthest point distance of the venue. It may be that maximum volume settings are not required.

Due to the development of technology, video is included in the output of an audio system. The audio system consists of input source and output cabling. Below are typical audio system components. All these components can help in increasing the volume of the speaker system.

Sound source

Usually, when dealing with sound, it is an air vibration when singing, talking, or humming. Pulse is measured by frequency, where it is cycles per sec or in hertz. Based on studies, humans can hear sounds from 20 hertz to 20 kilohertz. Microphones convert sound waves or air vibrations into electronic signals. The Microphone may be the wired type or the wireless type. There are other sound sources like the phonograph, audio players, phones, and other devices that give electronic signals that can be used to feed on a mixer or amplifier.


It is a device that combines two or more audio sources into one electronic signal mixed. It can provide one or more output signals that can either be analog or digital. In simple terms, it can plug two or more microphones into the mixer device. It is helpful in concerts or studios that combine several audio sources that further simplifies the recording and monitoring jobs. Some mixers have specific capabilities for equalization and effects input. 

Preamplifier and Power Amplifier

An amplifier increases the magnitude of an electronic signal utilizing electrical circuitry designed for audio signals. The amplifier is connected after the mixer device. The function of a preamplifier and a power amplifier is the same. The preamplifier is for faint signals that cannot be immediately increased or amplified by a power amplifier. A preamplifier is connected in series to a power amplifier system so that the power amplifier can have a higher level of audio output. 


A loudspeaker system is a device that produces sound from an electronic signal that is produced by the amplifier audio system. 

  • Loudspeaker. It is the most common type of speaker operating on a wide audio frequency range. It is a highly sensitive speaker driver that is efficient. The design of these speakers can effectively carry the sound that is needed as it can also cater to higher and lower frequencies of the sound spectrum.
  • Woofer and subwoofers. This type of speaker works effectively on low frequency. These are prominent speakers that give soft bass sounds and booms. These speakers take up so much amplifier power since you cannot hear their sound at great distances. Low-frequency sound cannot travel far unless there is enough power and energy to transmit the sound. 
  • Tweeter or Treble Speaker. This type of speaker caters to high pitch sounds that are sometimes called treble or tweeter sounds. 

The speaker types above are combined in a rectangular box with a single electronic input source from the power amplifier. A crossover network circuit is designed to divide the frequencies needed by each speaker driver type. The speaker box also has an exhaust hole to free up sound turbulence that can contradict the movement of the vibrating speakers mounted on the speaker box. A good speaker box can boost the sounds it is directed to, which is at its frontage.     

Connectors ( Wired or Cabled Type)

Speakers can be located such that it attains a maximum distance coverage. You may use ordinary electrical wires, but there are length limitations for ordinary electrical wires that affect the speakers’ performance. Sometimes you might encounter problems like impedance matching, noise interference, and power losses. These connectors are offered separately by manufacturers as they are designed and tested to overcome connection problems. The connectors are in cable type, which is protected by shielding for the interference issue. The conductors are also of the particular kind of conductors to have no resistance issue. These connectors come together with special adapters for easy connection and dismantling.

Characteristics of a Good Speaker and Audio System

Full Dynamic Range

Speaker systems can cater to the entire low and high audio frequency range. Some speaker systems can cater to low pitch audio sounds but cannot give quality high pitch sounds. These are considerations in purchasing your speaker sound system. A four-way speaker system caters to a wide range of speaker drivers that caters to each frequency, 20khz, 5khz, 200khz, or low 20Hz. 

Total Harmonic Distortion 

The manufacturer of an audio and speaker system can measure and give the total harmonic distortion (THD) on the specification on their devices. Although there is no perfect THD, the manufacturer provides a guarantee of a minimum acceptable value. A music enthusiast can not hear the total harmonic distortion since it is too faint. It is not a humming sound that is produced by a malfunctioning or flawed system. 

Power Rating or Wattage

For catering to large parties or meetings, take note that the higher the wattage, the sound output needed should be at a higher level. A low wattage rating cannot give a good sound system and can only cater to small areas. The higher wattage of a sound speaker system can cater to farther distances without overdrive or overheating the speaker system.


 Manufacturers have tested and concluded that all the speaker and audio system components should have the exact impedance matching for maximum performance efficiency. This impedance is in ohms. When purchasing these devices, you can check the specification, which says impedance in ohms. Microphones, mixers, audio amplifiers, speaker systems have impedance specifications that the manufacturer measures. If one or more of the components of your audio and speaker system is not matched, one or more of your precious devices may overwork or, say, overload that can lead to malfunction and overheat. The warranty of your device can be void.  


Cost may rise proportional to the capability and quality of the speaker system. With the web, you can now search forums and testimonies of branded speaker systems. Rating by the customers and product feedback can be at hand, so you can easily decide your speaker system according to your budget and preference.

Increasing the volume of a speaker system does not mean that you want a loud sound system. There are ways that you can enhance your audio and speaker system that as discussed above. You can increase the speaker volume by investing in cable connectors and repositioning your speaker boxes. You can also check the impedance of your Microphone, amplifier, and speaker system and correct the imbalance matching that can be making your speaker system weak. You can also add a preamplifier system to your power amplifier system. Investing in a new audio and speaker system may cost so much, but just a little understanding of your existing audio and speaker system may help help you improve your audiovisual presentation.
